i guess the problem here is that in order to go the way that people seem 
to prefer (i.e., using a profile parameter as per RFC 6906 instead of 
minting a new media type), this needs to be supported by the JSON media 
type itself. afaict, there seemed to be too little interest to add such 
a parameter to JSON. so when the JSON media type registration was 
updated recently, it still did not add such a parameter.

a rather big missed opportunity, imho. i tried to get some momentum 
behind the idea, but it seemed like people just weren't all that interested.
