Very nicely written up.

back to the default CRS if they encounter an unknown CRS."

Wouldn't that mean that if you don't understand the CRS, use WGS84?  
That could lead to some interesting results. I would say that  
processors that encounter an unknown CRS should not interpret the  
geographic coordinates.
